Slim-Down Saturday Report

It's Day 26 of my 90-day Nature's Sunshine Summer Slim-Down Challenge.  I've been juice fasting for the past week, with fruit juice in the morning and vegetable juice in the evening. I also drink water, green tea, or Nature's Sunshine Stixated, a berry flavored appetite suppressant that you can add to a bottle of water, throughout the day.  I cheated a couple of times because I was really craving protein.  I ate a spoonful of peanut butter one day, and two fork fulls of tuna another day.

The scale showed a weight loss of 4.2 pounds since last week, for a total weight loss of 14.4 pounds.
That's almost a bowling ball, but not quite.  I'm averaging a little over 1/2 pound weight loss per day.
I'm expecting to hit a plateau any day now.

Here are two of my favorite juice recipes that I prepare in my new juice machine, a Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Juice Extractor 67601.

Pineapple Citrus
The Juicing Bible (2nd Ed.) by Pat Crocker, p. 174

1/2 pineapple, cut into spears (I have also use canned pineapple in its own juice)
2 oranges, peeled
1 lime, peeled

Mean Green Juice
Joe Cross of Reboot with Joe
He's the creative force behind the award-winning documentary movie, Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.

6 leaves of kale
4 stalks of celery
1 cucumber, peeled
2 Granny Smith apples
1/2 lemon, peeled
1 thumb-size piece of ginger root

Frankly, I think green juice is an acquired taste.  But I'm getting used to it.  Sort of.

I treated myself to a store-bought veggie juice before tax class at our local Juice Stop.  It was a blend of carrots, beets, cucumber and ginger, and it was actually quite tasty.  A little earthy, but healthy.

64 days to go, and counting!

  2. You're doing awesome with this challenge! Almost 1/3 of the way there and you're still gaining ground!
I should really look into the green juices...I never get enough veggies!

    1. Thanks, Edi! I think a lot of us Midwesterners who grew up on meat and potatoes don't get enough veggies. The kale chips were actually a treat--and kale is like a super food with a zillion vitamins and minerals and phytonutrients.

  3. A juice fast for a week with barely a mouthful of cheating?! Wow! And that's more than any bowling ball I use! Congrats on your progress!

  6. Congrats on your continued weight loss! I'm doing the opposite of your diet by eating more protein and I've lost 13 lbs which I measure by picking up Isabella! :) Okay, she only weighs 12 lbs but still, it makes me realize how much weight that is.

    1. Congratulations!! After I'm done with the juice fast, and after my trip to NH, when I'll try to eat a modified mostly vegan diet, I will probably go back to the protein shakes, at least some days. I don't think being without protein and fiber long-term is a good idea.

    1. 1 only lasted 10 days on juice only, but I am trying to do alternating juice days. Decided I needed a little protein and fiber.
